Today, Apple announced the newest features of its upcoming iPhone 3.0 Operating System. Many of the features have been questioned for not being there from the beginning. But, it looks as though Apple has finally come around, quite possibly because of the recently announced Palm Pre. Regardless, here are the new features for the iPhone 3.0.
- Cut and Paste. Yes, a feature (that should have been there since the beginning) will now be available once version 3.0 is released.
- New iPhone “Home” Screen called “Spotlight.” This feature will allow you to search through everything on your phone including contacts, emails, MMS, etc. A feature, might I add, taken from the Palm Pre.
- Meebo will be a native app on the iPhone. This means you’ll have a built in instant messenger, like the Palm Pre.
- The iPhone’s 3.0 calendar will feature CalDAV. This feature lets you sync other calendars like Google Calendars. Yet another idea like the Palm Pre.
- Stereo Bluetooth. Something that should have been there since the beginning will now be available. Cough… Pre feature.
- Push. Yes, iPhone Apps can push content to your phone. Apple said they couldn’t let apps run in the background because it would literally suck up all the batteries juice. Aw, an idea they couldn’t take from the Pre.
- MMS (Multimedia Messaging). Yes, something every phone in the world can do and has been doing for years, so can the iPhone. Way to go, Apple!
- Send and Receive Files between iPhones.Yawn?
There are some other features in the iPhone 3.0. Most notably are all the new API’s. They will give developers access to almost every bit of the device including the ability to use the iPod library, GPS, contacts, email, maps, etc. All of this can be added to new applications.
I would like to stress I am a iPhone 3G owner. So, I enjoy the fact that my iPhone will have all these new features, however, I will still be getting a Pre. Why? Because AT&T is beyond the point of being call “the worst cellphone network in America.” More bars in more places? Hell no. It’s like “Less bars in more places.” Sorry AT&T, but your network blows.
I am a bit disappointed that it took the Palm Pre for all these features to come out. It looks as though Apple actually considers it competition. But what does that mean for the consumer? Oh, nothing but better innovation!
