Today, Barack Obama gave gay government workers limited job benefits in his fight to end discrimination. Before signing the order which would extend these benefits to the gay workers, he said
“Many of our government’s hardworking and dedicated and patriotic public servants have long been denied basic rights that their colleagues enjoyed for one simple reason: the people that they love are of the same sex.”
It’s incredibly saddening to see that we live in a world where a person who may do the exact same job — at equal or greater quality as the other workers in his or her office — may not be allowed the same benefits as their co-workers. Yes, I am gay and very excited to see Obama trying to take a stand against discrimination against gays. Although I know he doesn’t necessarily agree with “the gay lifestyle,” he does believe in equal rights for everyone no matter their race, gender, or sexuality.
In other gay news, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) issued a statement today regarding the Obama Administration’s decision to defend the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act. Two gay men, who were married in July of 2008, are trying to challenge the constitutionality of Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act. Additionally, the President of the HRC, Joe Solmonese said
“The Administration apparently determined that it had a duty to defend DOMA in the courts. The President has just as strong a duty to put his principles into action, and end discrimination against LGBT people and our families.” He then added, “We call on the President to send legislation repealing DOMA to Congress.”
