Vic Gundotra of Google makes fun of iPhone

Oh snap! While Google’s Vice President of Engineering, Vic Gundotra, may be stoked that his Android platform being the new GPS of the century, he was overly excited about said operating system‘s new messaging service and ability to multitask. With that said, he decided to make a clear jab at Apple’s lame excuse for notifications (read: “push”) and it’s clear lack of multitasking. During this mornings keynote on Android, Gundotra had this to say: Read more

Today, at Google’s second day for their 2010 developer conference, I/O, it was announced that users who use a smartphone coupled with the Android operating system have navigated over 1,000,000,000 (1-billion) miles using their free turn-by-turn GPS software. That’s  a significant milestone.

Flash Finally Arrives Perfectly On Your Mobile Device

May 12, 2010 by Troy

It’s been quite a year for Flash. The the once desktop-centric multimedia content has been [basically] banned from certain mobile devices; but that hasn’t pushed it completely away from the entire market. Take this video for example: Flash’s creator, Adobe, is hard at work making it all work on Android smart phones. Read more

Opera Mini 5 Browser for iPhone Is Fast, Unapproved For Now

March 23, 2010 by Troy

Opera has recently submitted a new iPhone/iPod touch app that looks to set the new speed for internet browsers on Apple’s little devices. The video above, which demonstrates some blazing speed, is the Opera Mini 5 browser. It’s very intuitive, fast, and — dare I say — better than Apples default browser. Sure it’s not approved by Apple, but lets hope it does.

Google’s Nexus One: ‘Bold and Beautiful’ or ‘Boring and Blah?’

January 6, 2010 by Troy

With all the new Android smartphones on the market, I’m becoming increasingly aware of Google’s baby operating system. I’ve honestly had it all — the iPhone 3G, Blackberry, and many others — but I haven’t bought an Android device, yet. Oh, and when I had the iPhone 3G I fell in love, but that love eventually turned into a love/hate relationship due to a lack of multi-tasking. Now Google, one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world, has decided to take a new approach to mobile computing by building it’s own phone: the Nexus One.

Lets get one thing straight before I go any further: I commend Google for the Open Handset Alliance and it’s efforts to protect the wireless spectrum. Furthermore, Google is probably the best company to come along in quite some time. Read more

Palm Pre Dunked In Beer, Survives For Almost A Minute!

October 11, 2009 by Troy

When I saw this video on Giz I figured the man would drop his Palm Pre in beer and it would, you know, go caput. But it’s isn’t so! The story behind the Palm Pre beer dunking is this: the man in the video, well, his screen kept cracking in his shirt pocket. His boss, being incredibly generous, offered to buy him an iPhone if he would drop his Pre in a mug of ale. When the man let go, his Pre kept functoning [-- in beer!]. I know it only lasted a minute, but that’s pretty frickin’ amazing seeing as the Pre has numerous open areas that would easily allow any beverage (or liquid for that matter) in.

Is Your Blackberry 8350i Full Of Problems?

September 18, 2009 by Troy

Blackberry 8350iNext door to our office is Ameritech, one of the leading roofing companies in the Florida Panhandle. It also happens to be owned by my boss’ husband. So, as I may be the “Office Tech Guy” for the real estate company, I’m also theirs. Recently, the roofing company decided to upgrade all their phones. Calling up Sprint, they knew they wanted new Blackberries since that’s what they’ve all been accustomed to.

Someone in the office (read: not me) recommended the Blackberry 8350i, a supposed “great addition” to the Blackberry family. At first, all of them seemed to work by offering a decent camera, Push-to-Talk (a.k.a. “bleep bleep”), WiFi and a host of other roofer-musts. It was only after about two weeks did we actually start seeing some of them fail, and by week three, it was like someone had been throwing them off the roof while no one was looking. Read more

Augmented Reality Coming To A GPS Near You

August 31, 2009 by Troy

Haven’t seen the latest craze hitting your mobile phone? Let me introduce you: augmented reality, meet nerdalicious blog reader. Now that you two are acquainted, may I suggest you watch the following video. It’s a new GPS app for the Android mobile OS, but it’s also coming to the iPhone.

While the app itself is a tad on the ugly side, you can definitely see the potential. I mean, those lame 3D city models used on current GPS systems is so, like, 2001. Instead of the 3D models, Mobilizy’s Wikitude overlays images onto live video straight from your mobile phone’s camera. I can see this being huge in like two years. I give it two years because augmented reality is just hitting the mainstream mobile market. It will need some time to marinate before fully realizing its potential. I will say though that Wikitude’s augmented GPS system is a great start and I can’t wait to see the iPhone version.
