Engadget Gets A Facelift For A New Year

engadget_new_themeThere have been many faces of Engadget. Some I’ve liked, others I have not. But, just a couple of days ago, the mother-of-all tech blogs got a facelift and man do I really like it.

What I’m sure started with a little tweaking turned into an all-out redesign. They’ve changed everything on the page including the header, title, fonts, colors and sidebar. The only part that stayed is the footer where all of the sister sites show their latest headlines.

I’m actually glad it happened though, as I really disliked their previous theme. The light blue title and stale white background was just… blah. The new one though, looks ‘perdy. One thing I would like to see changed, however, is the big headline at the very top under the search bar and logo. If it wasn’t static it would be much better suited for this area. Maybe a dynamic rotating banner.

The positives clearly outweigh the negatives because the redesign was well thought out. The quote, most commended posts, “game changer” and gadget stats are welcome additions tot he sidebar. The graph-like bars are way cool.

As much as I hate to say it, I’m now ready to change UniverseBot. I just wish I was as proficient and talented as the coders at Engadget.

Updated Design And Our New Mascot

universe-bot-1Ok, you may have noticed some tweeks to the site. But, then again, this could be your first time here, so, uh…. Anyway… First, I’ve moved the categories from under the post title, to above. It’s not really a user-friendly feature, it just looks more aesthetically pleasing. It’s still in the same general area, so it shouldn’t bother too many people.

Second up on the list is a post rating feature. I got the plugin from an awesome WordPress developer who you can visit here. He’s made some killer plugins including the Post Rating system, Polls, and other WordPress goodies.

Lastly, we officially have a mascot! Personally, I don’t give a fuck what anyone else says. He’s killer. Think of him like Eva, from Wall-E. He looks so cute and innocent, but packs a punch. I’m sure I’ll be able to find useful ways in adding him to pictures. Speaking of Eva, that’s actually where I did get some of the design from. I also went a little towards the Android logo, for the simple reason that it’s simplistic in design. If you have a logo that you think looks better than this, by all means, feel free to shoot me a e-mail. I’d be more than happy to take a look at anything.

Alright, enough ranting. I hope to hell you enjoy at least one of the updates. LOL.
